Pedro Pascal Replaces Joaquin Phoenix in Todd Haynes’s Gay Drama De Noche

According to CinemaDrame News Agency, Pedro Pascal is set to replace Joaquin Phoenix in Todd Haynes’s gay-themed film De Noche. Nearly two years ago, it was reported that Phoenix abruptly exited the project just five days before filming was scheduled to begin in Mexico, leaving producers scrambling.

Danny Ramirez will star as one of the two gay men in the 1930s. While Pascal has not yet signed a formal contract, Deadline reports that he is currently in negotiations with the producers. Phoenix never publicly revealed his reasons for leaving, though sources close to The Hollywood Reporter suggest that production-related issues factored into his decision.

Pascal recently worked with Phoenix on Ari Aster’s Eddington and appeared this past summer in Materialists and The Fantastic Four: First Steps. He has earned an Emmy nomination for the second season of The Last of Us and will next be seen in The Mandalorian and Grogu in 2026.

Haynes, meanwhile, released May December two years ago on Netflix, starring Julianne Moore and Natalie Portman, which went on to earn an Academy Award nomination for Best Screenplay. Over the past decades, his acclaimed films have included Far From Heaven, I’m Not There, and Carol.
